I have a trial version of MakeMKV and have been using it to great effect with a range of commercial Blu-rays. I've managed to successfully convert around 90% of the discs I've tried so far. Generally I find the quality of the resulting MKV files to be excellent.

I have two tools that can do this - Handbrake and a very impressive converter from a company called Emicsoft. Both work well, but the Emicsoft converter is a good deal faster than Handbrake and, to my mind at least, produces better results.
The problem I have is that whilst I can play all the MKV files perfectly with both VLC Player and Plex, both Handbrake and the Emicsoft converter can't recognise around 50% of the files created by MakeMKV. Handbrake reports no valid source found and the Emicsoft converter reports that it failed to load the file. The failures always occur on exactly the same files with both converters, and both are always successful with the same files.
I have tried stripping out subtitles as suggested by others on this forum, but I have not found this to help at all.
All of this is with OS X 10.5.
I have recently downloaded a Windows version of MakeMKV and it is possible this solves the problem with some of the problem movies, but I need to do some further testing to confirm this.
My OS X trial of MakeMKV is about to expire and I'm reluctant to go ahead with purchasing the product until I can get my success rate up. Having said that, the movies I have managed to convert are so good that I may just go ahead anyway, as none of the other products I've tried get even remotely close.
